Lakota Style Sweat Lodge, Called Inipi
A deep physical and spiritually journey in the heat and dark with our ancestors.
This is the medicine of the four directions and the four elements: fire, earth, air, and water. It is a ceremony of care and spiritual, physical, mental, and emotional purification, with the primary purpose of reunification. Marc’s main style follows the North American Indian Lakota Tradition, known as the Inipi Ceremony. At the center of the lodge is a hole dug to receive rocks that have been heated in a wood fire outside for at least 2-3 hours. Inside the lodge, the Lodge Pourer places water on the stones to create steam, known as the breath of The Great Creator. The Sweat Lodge is deeply connected to purification, astrology, and the process of life gestation. The entire lodge symbolizes a womb. Each element has a unique meaning: the fire represents the Sun, which gives its energy to the Earth, while the altar outside represents medicines. The center of the lodge signifies the Earth, which nurtures and welcomes us. The ceremony itself symbolizes the pregnancy of a woman, and upon emerging from the lodge, once purified, participants are said to be reborn. One of the central teachings of the Lakota tradition, as well as many other indigenous cultures, is that all things are interconnected. Humans, animals, plants, minerals, the elements, Mother Earth, and Father Sky—all are part of a great family that must be respected and honored. The prayers offered in the ceremony are primarily for the restoration of harmony among all members of this interconnected family. Aho.
